On a secret mission to surprise his single mom for Christmas, 13-year-old Diauris Reed, following the advice of his sister Deneisha, was outside again. He would sneak out regularly in the days before Christmas to collect cans so they could buy their mom a present.
But this time, he was outside for too long. His mom, Sophia, was worried sick and she called the police to report her son missing. Little Daneisha didn’t want to ruin the surprise, so she didn’t say a thing.
When local police found Diauris, he told them the truth. His single mother of two, had to spend all of her last money, to move the family to a new apartment. There was nothing left to celebrate the holidays.
“I just wanted to do something for my mama,” Diauris told KFOR-TV.
The officers were touched and soon, one by one, they started bringing Christmas and housewarming gifts. They also pitched in and raised some $800 for the family.
“There was so many knocks on my door, everybody just was knocking, just was knocking, and every time I opened my door, it was the police, the police,” remembers Sophia Reed.
